Four women in elegant light-colored dresses stand outside, smiling and laughing. Three hold white feathers, and one holds a small clutch. The scene is joyful and celebratory, possibly at a wedding or special event.

What does the maid of honour do?

Wondering what the maid of honour’s duties are? From planning the hen party to supporting the bride on the big day, here’s everything you need to know about this important wedding role

The Big debate

After a reason tiktok went a little viral of me fluffing a dress! it’s save to say it caused a huge debate about what the maid of honours job actually is! so let’s break it down!

Before the Wedding (Planning & Prep)

  • Hen party / bachelorette organiser – usually the MOH is the chief planner of the hen do, rallying the bridesmaids, booking activities, and making sure the bride has an unforgettable time.

  • DIY help – whether it’s making favours, tying ribbons, or stuffing envelopes, the maid of honour is often the one lending a hand with the little wedding prep jobs.

  • Moral support – being there for late-night chats, dress shopping trips, and the occasional “talk me down” moment when the wedding stress hits.

Contrary to Common Belief…

The maid of honour does have a job to do.
It’s not like there’s a 10-page PDF manual handed out with instructions (though wouldn’t that be handy?). But the role comes with plenty of little responsibilities — all designed to make sure the bride can relax and enjoy her day without worrying about the details.

Think of the maid of honour as the bride’s right-hand woman, the behind-the-scenes hero, and the go-to problem solver.

  • Morning Duties

The wedding morning can be a whirlwind, and this is where the maid of honour really steps up:

    • Gathering details – making sure jewellery, perfume, shoes, and other bits are ready for the photographer to capture those all-important “flat lay” detail shots.

    • Bridesmaid prep – ensuring all bridesmaid dresses are steamed, pressed, and hanging neatly. No last-minute crumples allowed.

    • Venue or décor help – lending a hand the night before or on the morning with small setup jobs so the bride doesn’t have to stress.

    • Looking after the bride – keeping food, drinks, and coffee flowing so she actually eats something amidst the chaos.

    • Hype-woman duties – reminding the bride she looks incredible, gorgeous, stunning — all day long.

    • Dress protection – making sure the wedding dress is kept pristine and safe from rogue makeup, dirt, or sticky fingers.

The All-Important Day Duties

Here’s where the maid of honour truly earns her title.

  • The aisle fluff – the iconic moment: fluffing the bride’s dress and veil once she’s reached the end of the aisle, with everyone watching. (No pressure!)

  • Drink top-ups during photos – family photos can be long and a little draining, so keeping the bride hydrated (and happy!) is key.

  • Guest wrangling – rounding up the right family members for photos so the photographer isn’t hunting people down.

  • Dress assistant – helping the bride move, sit, and pose comfortably in her dress during portraits.

  • Couple’s photos sidekick – joining the couple as they sneak away for photos, fluffing the dress, fixing the veil, and just generally making sure the bride looks flawless at all times. (Spoiler: it’s basically a full-time job!)

Reception & Evening

  • Speech duties – it’s becoming more common for the MOH to give a short toast or speech.

  • Keeping the bride comfortable – helping with bathroom trips (every bride needs a MOH bathroom buddy!), checking in on hair/makeup, and keeping tissues, plasters, and lipstick handy.

  • Coordinating bridesmaids – making sure the whole squad knows where they should be and when.

  • Dancefloor hype – dragging guests to the dancefloor if it starts looking empty and making sure the bride is always part of the fun.

Summary

The maid of honour is there to just make the day as easy as possible for the bride, and if your not sure what to do…just keep asking “is there anything you need help with” over time you will fall in to a good idea of what needs to be done.

Jokes a-side though…. make sure your on hand to help as much as possible, being a bride can be stressful enough and just having someone there to do these “little bitty” jobs can really make a huge difference to her day!
