weddings at Carlton Towers are nothing short of magical. Set in the heart of the Yorkshire countryside, this grand stately home combines elegance and romance in every corner. Every time I photograph here, it feels like stepping straight into a fairytale – and the atmosphere on a wedding day is just unforgettable.
The thing worth planning around at Clayfield is that it is a weekend venue, not a day venue. Hire includes accommodation for thirty across the Farmhouse, Martin and Hazel Cottages, the shepherd’s huts and the honeymoon suite in Rose Cottage. Practically, that changes the morning completely: prep happens where the wedding happens, nobody is driving in from a Travelodge, and the day starts slowly instead of in a car park. If you are booking me for full coverage, this is the kind of venue where the early hours are genuinely worth having photographed.
Second thing: ninety is a real cap, not a soft one. It keeps the day intimate, which suits the rooms, but it does mean the guest list conversation happens early rather than late.
On light — Dove Barn is warm and quite contained, so I shoot it wide open and let the timber go rich rather than fighting it back to neutral. The oak-framed room is the opposite: bright, high, white, and it holds up well into the evening. Between them the brick exterior and the gravel yard take late sun properly, so if your ceremony is early afternoon there is a genuine golden hour window worth stepping outside for. Ten minutes, that is all it takes.

Hellaby Hall Hotel is a wedding venue in South Yorkshire with space for both indoor and outdoor ceremonies. It has function rooms for wedding breakfasts and evening receptions, on-site accommodation for guests, and parking. The venue also offers in-house catering and a licensed bar. Couples can choose from different package options to suit their plans, and the staff manage the day from start to finish.
Hodsock Priory sits just outside Blyth in Nottinghamshire, a short run down the A1 from South Yorkshire, and the Tudor gatehouse is the picture everyone knows it by. What makes it work for a wedding day is less obvious from the outside: the getting-ready spaces, the gatehouse, the gardens and the reception all sit within a couple of minutes’ walk of each other, so almost none of the day is spent moving between places.
I have photographed here through late summer and into autumn. The notes below are the things I would want to know if I were planning a day here rather than shooting one.
The morning starts in the dedicated “disaster room”, which is exactly what it sounds like: somewhere to spread out, empty the bags and make as much mess as you like without any of it appearing in a photograph. For the final hour you move through to the bridal prep room, where the dress and flowers are set up.
The lads get the clubhouse, about thirty seconds’ walk from the main building. Having the two parties properly separate matters more than people expect — both sets of preparations get photographed properly rather than squeezed into one room, and nobody bumps into anybody before the ceremony.
Hodsock is licensed for outdoor ceremonies as well as indoor ones, and the grounds are big enough that an outdoor ceremony does not feel squeezed in beside everything else. Both of the weddings I have photographed here married outside, and in each case the walk from the ceremony to the drinks and on to the reception was a short one.
Confetti happens on the path immediately outside, which at Hodsock means a proper tunnel of people rather than a polite scattering — there is room for everyone to line both sides.
The group photograph then happens under the gatehouse arch, and this is the single most useful thing about the venue from a photography point of view. The arch holds a large group comfortably without anyone disappearing behind a pillar or being pushed out of frame, and it is a short walk from the rest of the day, so you do not lose half your drinks reception getting there and back.
The grounds are big enough that portraits never repeat the same backdrop twice. Between the front of the house, the walled areas, the lawns and the gatehouse itself, twenty minutes away from the party covers it comfortably. That is worth knowing when you are building a timeline, because it means you are not choosing between photographs and being at your own wedding.
Hodsock is exclusive-use, so the whole place is yours for the day and the evening runs on your terms rather than around anybody else. There is plenty of room on the grass for lawn games, and they earn their place — a set of crazy golf at one of the weddings I shot here filled the awkward gap between the speeches and the evening guests arriving, and produced some of my favourite photographs of the day. Guests in their wedding best, entirely losing their composure over a putt.

From the pergolas and flowerbeds to the Courtyard, The Oakwood at Ryther is a photographer’s playground and a couple’s dream venue.
Nestled beside Bolton Abbey and encased within the romantic ruins of Barden Tower, The Priest’s House is one of Skipton’s most unique wedding venues. With breathtaking countryside views and a historic ceremony room full of character, it’s the perfect backdrop for couples dreaming of a magical Yorkshire wedding.
Originally built to house priests (hence the name), the venue blends centuries of history with modern comforts. An onsite cottage can sleep 20+ guests, making it ideal for large bridal parties who want to celebrate together. Surrounded by rolling hills and endless countryside, you’ll never be short of picture-perfect spots for your wedding photographs.

Priory Barn & Cottages is a stunning countryside wedding venue tucked away in the heart of North Yorkshire near Leeds and Tadcaster. Set around a charming courtyard, it offers a beautifully rustic barn, stylish marquee, and cosy self-catering cottages for you and your guests. With exclusive use, gorgeous rural surroundings, and plenty of space to celebrate, it’s the perfect mix of relaxed, homely comfort and picture-perfect wedding setting.
The Coniston Hotel sits on a 1,400-acre estate at Coniston Cold, just outside Skipton, and it is one of the few North Yorkshire wedding venues where you genuinely never need to leave. Ceremony, reception, photographs, spa, restaurant and beds for your guests are all in one place, wrapped around a private lake with the Dales rising behind it.
The hotel has a relaxed country feel rather than a formal one — modern spaces, big views in every direction, and enough room on the estate that a hundred and fifty guests never feel packed in. You can hold the ceremony looking out over the water, take drinks on the terrace, and move inside for dinner and dancing without anyone getting in a car.
Estates this size can be a trap: plenty of space, but only a handful of spots that genuinely work. At Coniston the distances are short, which is the thing that matters most on the day — prep rooms, ceremony, drinks and dinner are all minutes apart, so the time goes on photographs rather than logistics.
The ceremony room takes an aisle walk well. It is wide enough that guests are not craning to see, and there is enough window light that I am rarely fighting the room. The interiors also hold up in bad weather, which is not true of every venue sold on its view — and it is the question worth asking of any North Yorkshire venue booked between October and March.
Not every couple realises the lake itself is an option. Rebecca and George were married down by the water, and it is a completely different feel to an indoor ceremony — open sky, the hills behind, and the whole estate as your backdrop rather than four walls. It also means your ceremony photographs and your couple portraits happen in the same place, so you are not marching guests around the estate between the two.
It is worth asking the venue what they can offer outdoors for your date, since the weather and the time of year change what is practical.

The thing worth planning around at Wentbridge is the valley. Being down in it means the light goes earlier than you would expect for the time of year — the sun drops behind the hillside before it properly sets. If you want golden-hour couple photos here, we should head out a good half hour earlier than the calendar suggests.
The pavilion is the centrepiece, and it is what makes the outdoor ceremony work here. It is covered, which means an outdoor ceremony stays an outdoor ceremony even if it turns — and in Yorkshire that matters more than anyone wants to admit. weddings there across every season — a bright spring day out on the lawn, a black-tie summer wedding in
