Shooting in Halifax

What it is like photographing a wedding here

Halifax is home turf. I live just up the road, which means I know these venues in the kind of detail you only get from shooting them over and over — where the light lands at The Moorlands in late afternoon, which corner of The Fleece Inn stays sheltered when the wind comes down the valley, and exactly how long it takes to walk a wedding party up to the good spots at Southwood.

It is a proper Pennine town: steep hills, blackened millstone grit, and countryside that starts the moment you leave the centre. That mix is a gift photographically. You can go from an industrial mill backdrop to open moorland in ten minutes, which means a Halifax wedding gallery rarely looks like anywhere else in Yorkshire.

The weather here has opinions. I have photographed a wedding at The Fleece Inn in a full storm and it produced some of my favourite images of that year — wind in the veil, everyone laughing, nobody pretending it was a calm day. If you are getting married in Calderdale, I will not be the photographer suggesting we abandon the outdoor photos because of a bit of drizzle.

Being local also means practical things: no travel fee, no risk of me getting caught on the M62, and a decent idea of where your guests can actually park.

How I shoot

Relaxed, unposed, and actually fun

No awkward poses and no standing around. I blend into the background when that is what the moment needs, and I am right in the middle of it when the dance floor gets going.

Family formals get done quickly and without fuss — a short list, ten minutes, and you are back with your drink. The rest of the day I spend photographing what actually happens.

If you are planning a Halifax wedding that is more about the people than the place settings, we will get on.
