Shooting in North Yorkshire North Yorkshire is the biggest county in England and it covers an enormous range — the Dales in the west, the Moors and the coast in the east, and a lot of very good wedding venues scattered between them. The Tithe Barn at Bolton Abbey is the one I know best, and it deserves its reputation: a genuine medieval barn with the Priory ruins and the River Wharfe on the doorstep. Priests House at Barden Towers sits further up the same valley and is smaller and more intimate. The Coniston Hotel near Skipton gives you the estate and the lake. Danby Castle, right out on the North York Moors, is about as remote and atmospheric as weddings in this county get. The thing to understand about getting married out here is distance. These venues are often a long way from anywhere, which is exactly the appeal, but it affects guest travel, accommodation and how you build your day. It also means the light is worth planning around properly, because when you have views like these it would be a shame to do the couple photos at the wrong time of day. How I shoot
No awkward poses and no standing around. I blend into the background when that is what the moment needs, and I am right in the middle of it when the dance floor gets going.
Family formals get done quickly and without fuss — a short list, ten minutes, and you are back with your drink. The rest of the day I spend photographing what actually happens.
