Sedgewell Barn sits in sixty acres of North Yorkshire farmland three miles west of Northallerton, and it is one of those venues where the whole day happens in one place. Stephen and Emma used every bit of it.
Emma got ready on site while Stephen and his lads took one of the glamping pods a short walk away. That is a genuinely useful quirk of this venue — there are eleven pods with hot tubs and their own bathrooms, so both halves of the morning happen on the same land without anybody sharing a mirror. It also means no one is driving anywhere before the ceremony.
Emma’s flowers set the tone for the whole day: sunflowers and deep oranges against ivory, which carried straight through to the tables.
They married in the Celebration Barn, which is the larger of the two ceremony spaces and the reason a lot of couples book here. One whole wall is glass, looking out over the fields towards the Dales, so the room fills with daylight and nobody needs a flash. As a photographer it is about as good as a barn gets — the light is even, the aisle is wide, and the view behind the couple does half the work.
Then the bit nobody expected. A Shetland pony, groomed, flower-crowned, with a wicker basket of confetti strapped to its back, walked down the line so guests could help themselves. It is the single most charming thing I have photographed this year, and the confetti run afterwards was all the better for it.
Drinks and lawn games outside, speeches back in the barn, then golden hour across the farmland for twenty minutes of couple portraits. The sun dropping over open fields with nothing in the way is the other thing this venue quietly gets right.
