Shooting in Harrogate Harrogate does elegant better than almost anywhere in Yorkshire, and it knows it. Spa town architecture, the Valley Gardens, and venues that lean towards the refined end of things — The Sun Pavilion with its glass and light, Rudding Park with its grounds and its gardens. Those two venues want quite different things from a photographer. The Sun Pavilion is bright, airy and full of natural light, which suits a documentary approach — you can shoot all day without ever needing to interrupt anyone. Rudding Park gives you scale and formal gardens, which is lovely, but it also means walking distances between locations that need building into the timeline properly. Harrogate weddings also tend to be a little more traditional in structure, and that is completely fine by me. I still shoot mostly candid — roughly five per cent posed — but I know how to run family groups efficiently when there is a longer list of them, and get you back to your drinks rather than standing in a line for forty minutes. Harrogate, Ripon, Knaresborough and the Nidderdale villages are all comfortably within my usual patch.What it is like photographing a wedding here

How I shoot
No awkward poses and no standing around. I blend into the background when that is what the moment needs, and I am right in the middle of it when the dance floor gets going.
Family formals get done quickly and without fuss — a short list, ten minutes, and you are back with your drink. The rest of the day I spend photographing what actually happens.
