Shooting in Thirsk

What it is like photographing a wedding here

Thirsk sits in that quiet stretch of North Yorkshire between the Dales and the Moors, and the weddings here have a slower, more rural feel to them. Farmland, big skies, and venues that are usually somewhere down a lane rather than on a main road.

Thirsk Lodge Barns is the one people know — converted farm buildings with a courtyard that works beautifully for a drinks reception. Crab and Lobster over at Asenby is completely different again: eccentric, crammed with character, and much more fun to photograph than a neutral space. Alexander Weddings and Events out towards Northallerton gives you the open farmland version.

Rural North Yorkshire weddings need a bit more thought about light than city ones. There is very little ambient light once the sun goes down, which is a gift if you want atmospheric evening photos and a problem if nobody has planned for it. I will talk that through with you beforehand rather than improvising on the night.

Thirsk, Northallerton and the surrounding villages are an easy run up the A1 and I do not charge travel for them.

How I shoot

Relaxed, unposed, and actually fun

No awkward poses and no standing around. I blend into the background when that is what the moment needs, and I am right in the middle of it when the dance floor gets going.

Family formals get done quickly and without fuss — a short list, ten minutes, and you are back with your drink. The rest of the day I spend photographing what actually happens.

If you are planning a Thirsk wedding that is more about the people than the place settings, we will get on.
