Lauren and Matthew’s day at Wentbridge House Hotel was one of those weddings where everything just landed. An outdoor ceremony under the pavilion, a house full of proper period character behind it, and two people who were entirely themselves all day — which, selfishly, is the easiest kind of wedding to photograph.
Wentbridge sits in a wooded valley just off the old Great North Road near Pontefract. You come down the hill, the trees open out, and there is the house. It does not announce itself from the road, which is part of the charm.
Lauren got ready in one of the rooms on site, which is a genuine advantage here. They are bright and generously sized — enough space that the whole bridal party fits without anyone being backed into a corner — and the light through the windows does most of the work for me.
The best part is the view. You can see the ceremony setup from the room, so there is a proper moment mid-morning where everyone crowds the window for a look at what is being built downstairs. Those are always good photos, and they only happen at venues where you get ready on site.
The pavilion is what makes Wentbridge. It is a covered outdoor ceremony space, which means you get everything good about marrying outside — open air, greenery, natural light on both of your faces — without staking the whole day on a Yorkshire forecast.
An outdoor ceremony has never looked so good. The aisle is long enough that the walk actually reads as a walk, and the pavilion frames the two of you cleanly from where the guests are sitting.
They finished with a dip halfway down the aisle in the middle of the confetti, and absolutely smashed it. If you are up for something like that, tell me beforehand and I will make sure I am in the right place — a confetti line lasts about eight seconds and there are no retakes.
Drinks afterwards spilled out onto the lawns, which is where the venue earns its keep. Formal gardens, open space, and enough room that guests spread out rather than bunching by the bar.
Inside, the interiors are warm and traditional rather than the white-box look a lot of venues have moved towards — which I like, because the room has its own character and the photos come out feeling like somewhere rather than anywhere.
One practical note if you are marrying here: the valley means the light goes early. The sun drops behind the hillside before it properly sets, so we headed out ahead of the time the calendar suggested. Twenty minutes away from your guests, and it is always worth it.
Then back inside for the evening, which went exactly the way a good wedding should.
It holds up to 140 guests, there is accommodation on site, dogs are welcome, and the covered pavilion means an outdoor ceremony is a real option rather than a gamble. There is the house itself — stone, sash windows, proper period detail — which photographs beautifully in flat light when everyone else is complaining about the weather. And there are the interiors, which are warm and traditional rather than the white-box look a lot of venues have gone for.

Yes — there are rooms on site. It makes a real difference to the morning: prep happens where the wedding happens, so nobody is driving anywhere and the day starts calmly rather than in a car park.
Yes. Worth saying plainly, because couples ask constantly and hardly any venue page answers it. If your dog is walking down the aisle, tell me beforehand and I will make sure someone is watching them at the right moment.
Yes — the outdoor ceremony under the pavilion is the venue’s best feature. Because it is covered, you get an outdoor ceremony without gambling the whole day on the forecast.
The pavilion keeps the ceremony dry, and the house itself gives you stone, sash windows and period detail that photograph better in flat light than they do in bright sun. A grey day here is genuinely not a problem — I would still take you outside.
Earlier than you would expect. The valley means the sun disappears behind the hillside before actual sunset, so I plan couple photos around half an hour ahead of the times an app will give you. Build twenty minutes into the timeline and we will get it.
