I was lucky enough to meet Rebecca at her best friend’s wedding, so I knew exactly what I was walking into — lots of fun! These girls were in great spirits, just as I expected, all cheering each other on, and I felt right at home the moment I arrived.
They chose to get married by the lake, which made the perfect backdrop, so we stayed down there afterwards for the couple portraits too. It only made sense.
Rebecca and George had been together a long time. After years of going to friends’ and family’s weddings, one after another, it was finally their turn.
In the evening, with the drinks flowing, they had some fun with the local statue sheep. Sorry, Coniston! But those are the memories that stay with you.
The Coniston Hotel sits on a 1,400-acre estate at Coniston Cold, just outside Skipton, and it is one of the few North Yorkshire wedding venues where you genuinely never need to leave. Ceremony, reception, photographs, spa, restaurant and beds for your guests are all in one place, wrapped around a private lake with the Dales rising behind it.
The hotel has a relaxed country feel rather than a formal one — modern spaces, big views in every direction, and enough room on the estate that a hundred and fifty guests never feel packed in. You can hold the ceremony looking out over the water, take drinks on the terrace, and move inside for dinner and dancing without anyone getting in a car.
Estates this size can be a trap: plenty of space, but only a handful of spots that genuinely work. At Coniston the distances are short, which is the thing that matters most on the day — prep rooms, ceremony, drinks and dinner are all minutes apart, so the time goes on photographs rather than logistics.
The ceremony room takes an aisle walk well. It is wide enough that guests are not craning to see, and there is enough window light that I am rarely fighting the room. The interiors also hold up in bad weather, which is not true of every venue sold on its view — and it is the question worth asking of any North Yorkshire venue booked between October and March.
Not every couple realises the lake itself is an option. Rebecca and George were married down by the water, and it is a completely different feel to an indoor ceremony — open sky, the hills behind, and the whole estate as your backdrop rather than four walls. It also means your ceremony photographs and your couple portraits happen in the same place, so you are not marching guests around the estate between the two.
It is worth asking the venue what they can offer outdoors for your date, since the weather and the time of year change what is practical.
